What is Collage Art?

A collage is a form of art which is created by using different things like newspaper cuttings, cards, bits of colored paper, portion of artworks, photographs and cutouts and many more other forms of material which are used to create a Collage art.

Collage as we know it today was started in the early Twentieth Century, by modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who glued objects and paper to canvasses. In fact the word collage comes from the French work coller, meaning glue. This indicates a key aspect of collage – the sticking of disparate elements to a canvas (even if that canvas is not a physical canvas). This original idea behind collage allowed for the relationship between painting and sculpture to be reexamined.

In the 21st Century characterised by BROADBAND and personal computers, collage has expanded to include works created using digital media. Specifically, photographic collage art combines photographs to create new, often whimsical works. Techniques used can include shrinking of large photographs to make cells in a mosaic, cutting of photographs to be included in new images and the taking of multiple photographs to create new freer images.
